Opportunity Corps program celebrates women in STEAM

February 11 marked the kick-off session of Opportunity Corps, UNeTech Institute and Bio Nebraska’s professional development, entrepreneurship, and mentorship program for women in STEAM.

Funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Opportunity Corps is a ten-month program that will cover a wide array of topics related to starting and leading a business and will feature subject matter experts and entrepreneurs from academia and the STEAM community.

The first session included a morning presentation from UNeTech’s Innovation Development Strategist Dr. Jace Gatzemeyer on the basics of startup establishment, covering why startups fail and the nine deadly mistakes startups can make. The afternoon focused on mentorship and mapping out life and career trajectories. Cohort members were given the chance to meet and connect with their mentorship teams.

Session two is scheduled for March 11, and the focus will be business models and customer discovery.

Twenty-four participants were selected through a competitive process, and five STEAM mentors will lead the participants throughout the program.
